Will you still remember me?
-Ronnie Van Zandt
Well, looks like Osama bin Laden has died. I really have no opinion on it, can't say as I knew the guy personally. I know he felt betrayed by the US, who supported him during the campaign against the Soviet Union. So it would seem that we don't have a problem with fundamentalist Muslims, as long as they're fighting the bad guys- the enemy of my enemy is my friend?
But guys, before we go breaking out the bubbly, keep something in mind. We're talking about a titular head of a terrorist organization. There isn't a big building out there that says 'Terrorist Club' where everyone meets to clean their AK-47s. The nature of a terrorist network is invisibility and subtlety- terrorist networks are divided into small groups- it's highly unlikely that any one group has complete knowledge of the whole. Let's say person 1 has a contact- person 2. Now, person 1 doesn't know who person 2 is going to relay information to- and person 3 doesn't know who person 1 is. See how it works? Long story short, any given member of the network will not have knowledge of the whole, so catching one of them will provide only limited information.

Kind of a bitch to get rid of, isn't it? But the fact that these guys have lost an iconic figure probably doesn't do too much for morale. What really happened out there? For one I don't know. Hopefully things will continue to improve at home and abroad. But at the risk of sounding cynical, trouble always finds a way of popping up. So does hope.
Down here at the zoo it's pretty much the same old story, although the wit and wisdom of Fort Sill is revealed when they closed one of the main routes on and off post. Now, this isn't in and of itself an issue, as perhaps construction was actually needed there. However, wouldn't it make sense to compensate for the massively increased traffic volume? Yes- so Fort Sill decides to slow the already crawling traffic to a graveyard by conducting inspections on every single vehicle coming in the gate. Something they never did before- neither did they check IDs. Personally, I could care less. Just pointing out your tax dollars at work, citizens. I can't count on six hands the number of times I could have been transporting more than enough poisonous, toxic, explosive or generally nasty stuff onto post in my car without post security so much as batting an eyelid. Interesting that the actual MPs, the guys who wear those funny suits and have 'MP' on their shoulder actually seem to do all the work.
I'm not trying to get down on civilians- hell, used to be one myself! And probably will be one again at some point. Just it seems to make no sense whatsoever that we're cutting Army jobs, but can't cut unnecessary spending like this. I leave it for history to judge.
On a lighter note, go forth and enjoy the May weather! Assuming it's not too horrendous wherever you may be!
